Wheels locked up, help please!

Hello, I don't know if anyone knows why my front wheels locked on my Golf? Drove to work fine, then tried to drive away in the evening and the front wheels are completely locked up. It goes into gear fine, and the will move an inch in reverse before stalling. There is fluid leakage, possibly gearbox?
Any advice appreciated. Mechanic at garage wants to replace the entire gearbox.

Oh dear, does sound like a transmission issue and would need recovering to a garage to diagnose further.
Get a quote before committing to any repairs as this could be expensive
